Effective date: July 4, 2026. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information Humour Closet collects when you visit our website or submit a video, how and where we store and process that information, the third parties involved, and the choices and rights you have over your data.
In this policy, "Humour Closet," "we," "us," and "our" refer to Humour Closet Media, Inc., the operator of humourcloset.com and the YouTube channel @HumorCloset. "Personal information" (also called "personal data") means information that identifies or relates to you as an individual. This policy works alongside our Terms of Service, Terms of Submission, Copyright Policy, and Contest Rules. If you enter our contest, please read the Contest Rules and Terms of Submission closely, because submitting a video grants us broad rights to your content (summarized in Section 3 below).
1. Who We Are and How to Reach Us
Humour Closet Media, Inc. is the "data controller" responsible for the personal information described here — meaning we decide why and how it is handled. For any privacy question, request, or concern, email privacy@humourcloset.com. For legal or Terms matters, use legal@humourcloset.com, and for copyright or DMCA notices use copyright@humourcloset.com.
2. What Personal Information We Collect
We collect information in two main ways: information you give us directly, and technical information generated automatically when you use our site.
Information you provide when you submit a video
Our homepage submission form collects the following when you send us a video:
- Your name — so we can identify and credit the submitter.
- Your email address — so we can contact you about your submission, verify details, and (for contest entrants) notify winners.
- Video title, category, and an optional description — to organize, review, and describe the content you send.
- Your video content — either an uploaded video file (MP4, MOV, AVI, or MKV, up to 1 GB) or a video URL you paste from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Google Drive, or Dropbox. Video content may itself contain personal information, such as the images, voices, or likenesses of people who appear in it. When you submit, you confirm that you personally recorded the video and are its sole creator (see Section 3).
- Your consent selections — including your confirmation that you recorded the video and are its sole creator, that you are 13 years of age or older, and that you agree to our Terms of Service and Terms of Submission, plus your optional indication that you are an EU citizen or resident.
Information collected automatically
When you visit our site, our hosting and infrastructure providers automatically receive certain technical data that is standard for websites to operate and deliver pages securely — such as your IP address, browser type and settings, device information, and the date and time of your request. This information is generated as a normal part of serving web pages and processing form submissions. As explained in Section 6, we do not run advertising cookies or a third-party analytics suite of our own.
3. Why We Use Your Information and Our Legal Bases
We use the personal information above only for the following purposes:
- To receive, review, and respond to your submission — including reviewing your video for possible curation, editing, publication, distribution, and other exploitation on our website, our YouTube channel, and other media, under the license you grant at submission (see below).
- To administer our quarterly contest — including judging entries, notifying winners, issuing prize payments, and meeting related tax-reporting obligations (winners receive an IRS Form 1099). See our Contest Rules for details.
- To communicate with you about your submission or a request you send us.
- To operate, secure, and maintain our website, including preventing fraud and abuse.
- To comply with legal obligations and to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
Important — the rights you grant in your content. This is a privacy summary, not a substitute for the Terms of Submission and Contest Rules, but you should understand it up front: by submitting a video, you grant Humour Closet Media, Inc. an exclusive, unlimited, perpetual, worldwide license to use, edit, reproduce, distribute, broadcast, license, advertise, and otherwise exploit your content in any and all media. You also warrant that you are the sole owner of all rights in the content and that it infringes no third party's rights. Because this license is broad and perpetual, content we have already published or licensed may continue to be used even if you later withdraw a submission or ask us to delete your personal information (see Sections 7 and 8).
Where the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Consent — for handling your submission and video content. When you submit, you affirmatively agree to our Terms of Submission and grant the content license described above. You can withdraw your consent at any time (see Section 8), though withdrawal does not affect processing that already took place or content already published or licensed.
- Contract — to take steps at your request and to administer the contest you choose to enter.
- Legitimate interests — to operate and secure our site, respond to you, and prevent misuse, balanced against your rights and freedoms.
- Legal obligation — where we must process data to comply with the law, such as tax reporting for prize winners.
4. How and Where Your Data Is Stored and Processed
We keep our infrastructure simple and rely on established service providers:
- Storage. Uploaded video files are stored in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Simple Storage Service (S3), in the US East (N. Virginia) region, us-east-1. When you submit a link instead of a file, we save that submission as a structured (JSON) record in the same S3 storage. Your name, email, video title, and category are attached to the stored object as metadata.
- Uploads. File uploads use short-lived, single-purpose "presigned" links that let your browser send your file directly to our storage for a limited time.
- Processing and hosting. Our website is hosted on Netlify, and submissions are processed by serverless functions running on Netlify.
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you have questions about our safeguards, contact privacy@humourcloset.com.
5. Third Parties We Work With
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers that make our website work, and only as needed for the purposes above. Each of these providers handles data under its own privacy policy, which we encourage you to review:
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) — stores your video files and submission records.
- Netlify — hosts our website and runs the functions that process submissions.
- Google / YouTube Data API — our site displays our brand's public YouTube videos using this Google service, and our published content may appear on YouTube.
- Google Fonts — we load web fonts from Google so pages display correctly.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our Terms, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Humour Closet, our users, or others.
6. Cookies and Similar Technologies
Humour Closet does not currently set advertising cookies and does not run a third-party analytics suite on our own site. However, when our pages embed content or load resources from Google services — including embedded YouTube videos and Google Fonts — those third parties may set their own cookies or collect data through your browser, governed by their own policies. You can control cookies through your browser settings, though blocking some cookies may affect how embedded content works.
7. How Long We Keep Your Data
We keep submissions and the personal information attached to them for as long as reasonably necessary to review, curate, and use the content you submitted, to administer any contest you entered, and to meet our legal and record-keeping needs. We do not currently set a fixed, universal retention period. If you would like your submission removed, or want to know how long we expect to keep specific data, email privacy@humourcloset.com, and we will respond in line with applicable legal requirements. As noted in Section 3, content we have already published or licensed under the Terms of Submission may continue to exist and be used under the rights granted at submission, even after deletion of your account-level contact data.
8. Your Privacy Rights and Choices
You have choices about your personal information, and you can exercise them by emailing privacy@humourcloset.com. To protect your data, we may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.
- Access — ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correction — ask us to fix inaccurate or incomplete information, such as your name or email.
- Deletion — ask us to delete your personal information.
- Withdraw a submission — ask us to remove a video you submitted. Email privacy@humourcloset.com with enough detail (such as the email address you submitted with and the video title) for us to locate it. Please note that withdrawal cannot undo uses that already occurred, and content already published or licensed may remain subject to the exclusive, perpetual rights granted under the Terms of Submission.
EU and UK residents (GDPR)
Because our submission form includes an optional checkbox for EU citizens and residents, we want to be clear about your rights. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you also have the right to object to or restrict certain processing, the right to data portability, the right to withdraw consent at any time, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Please also note that your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States (see Section 10). To exercise any of these rights, contact privacy@humourcloset.com.
California residents (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use and disclose it, the right to request access to and deletion of your personal information, the right to correct inaccurate information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising your rights. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined under California law. To make a request, email privacy@humourcloset.com.
9. Children's Privacy
Our site and submission form are intended for people who are 13 years of age or older, and you must confirm you are at least 13 to submit. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information — or if you are the parent or guardian of a minor between 13 and the age of legal majority who has submitted content and you wish to review or remove it — please contact privacy@humourcloset.com so we can address it, including removing the information where appropriate.
10. International Data Transfers
Humour Closet operates from the United States, and the data we collect — including video files and submission records — is stored and processed in the United States (our storage is in the AWS us-east-1 region). If you access our site or submit content from outside the United States, including from the EU or UK, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where data-protection laws may differ from those in your country. By submitting, you understand that your information will be handled as described in this policy.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or the law. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page and post the updated version here at /privacy.html. We may highlight significant changes on our site. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Your continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
12. Contact Us
If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or wish to exercise any of your rights — including requesting deletion of a submission — please email privacy@humourcloset.com. For Terms or general legal matters, contact legal@humourcloset.com, and for copyright or DMCA notices, contact copyright@humourcloset.com. This policy is governed by the laws of the State of California, USA.
